Turritella Agate Fossils

"Turritella Agate" is based on a case of mistaken identity.  This intriguing stone consists of fossils of freshwater snails that were deposited in a series of ancient lakes in present-day Wyoming.  When first discovered, they were mistaken for Turritella, a genus of marine snail with a similar high-spired shell, but that lives only in the ocean.  The name for this distinctive fossil stone has persisted, although the snails whose shells you see in these tumble-polished specimens are correctly classified as Elimia tenera, not Turritella.  They lived during the Eocene Epoch, about 50 million years ago.

How Do Fossils Form?

Most animals and plants don't turn into fossils after they die.  Conditions have to be just right, including rapid burial by sediments.  If an organism dies and is quickly buried by sediments like mud and sand, the remains eventually decay, leaving only the skeleton.  Accumulating pressure turns the surrounding sediments into rock.  Over time, water seeps through the rock and dissolves the skeleton, leaving behind an empty cavity or mold that preserves the original shape.

Over time, water rich in minerals seeps into the cavity, and the minerals crystallize to fill the cavity and form a cast.  Millions of years later, geologic forces bring the fossil-containing rock to the earth's surface, where it may be eroded by wind and rain, exposing the fossil to discovery.

Metaphysical Properties of Turritella Agate

Turritella Agate is highly prized for its metaphysical properties.  It is believed to overcome negativity and bitterness, and to protect against danger.  It can help adjust to transitions, and bring someone "down to earth."  It helps to alleviate fear and restore self-confidence.
