Trilobites

Trilobites were an incredibly diverse and successful group of bottom-dwelling marine arthropods that went extinct at the end of the Paleozoic Era, before the Age of Dinosaurs.  Arthropodia is the phylum of animals with jointed legs, like insects, spider, and shrimp.  Trilobites are closely related to modern horseshoe crabs.

Trilobite means "three lobes," referring to its longitudinal division into a center axial lobe with two pleural lobes on each side.  The bodies of Trilobites are also divided into the cephalon (head section), thorax (midsection), and the pygidium (tail section.)  Trilobites roamed the oceans for 270 million years, and today play a valuable role helping geologists date the age of the rock in which their fossils are found.

We offer two different Trilobite species on this page, and you will receive the exact same specimen shown in the photo.

How Do Fossils Form?

Most animals and plants don't turn into fossils after they die.  Conditions have to be just right, including rapid burial by sediments.  The sea floor is an ideal environment for fossilization, which is why so many fossils are marine creatures.

After a marine organism dies, it sinks to the sea floor, where it gets buried by sediments like mud and sand that fall from the ocean above.  The remains eventually decay, leaving only the skeleton, and accumulating pressure turns the surrounding sediments into rock.  Over time, water seeps through the rock and dissolves the skeleton, leaving behind an empty cavity or mold that preserves the original shape.

Over time, water rich in minerals seeps into the cavity, and the minerals crystallize to fill the cavity and form a cast.  Millions of years later, geologic forces bring the fossil-containing rock to the earth's surface, where it may be eroded by wind and rain, exposing the fossil to discovery.

Metaphysical Properties of Trilobites

Trilobite fossils are believed to enhance leadership and management skills.  They strengthen qualities of patience, will power, and perseverance.  Trilobite fossils may be able to help you to achieve your goals.
