Mosasaur Fossils

Mosasaurs were a group of huge carnivorous aquatic reptiles that flourished during the Late Cretaceous Period.  They were the largest lizards that ever lived, some reaching 60 feet in length, and are sometimes called the "T-Rex of the Seas."

Mosasaurs were powerful swimmers, breathed air, and were so well-adapted to the sea that they gave birth to live young, instead of returning to shore to lay eggs.  They had double-hinged jaws like those of snakes, which allowed them to swallow their prey almost whole.

The Mosasaur tooth fossils on this page are from Morocco, and are 65 - 70 million years old.

How Do Fossils Form?

Most animals and plants don't turn into fossils after they die.  Conditions have to be just right, including rapid burial by sediments.  The sea floor is an ideal environment for fossilization, which is why so many fossils are marine creatures.

After a marine organism dies, it sinks to the sea floor, where it gets buried by sediments like mud and sand that fall from the ocean above.  The remains eventually decay, leaving only the skeleton, and accumulating pressure turns the surrounding sediments into rock.  Over time, water seeps through the rock and dissolves the skeleton, leaving behind an empty cavity or mold that preserves the original shape.

Over time, water rich in minerals seeps into the cavity, and the minerals crystallize to fill the cavity and form a cast.  Millions of years later, geologic forces bring the fossil-containing rock to the earth's surface, where it may be eroded by wind and rain, exposing the fossil to discovery.
