Fossil Slabs

Fossil Slabs

Dinosaur Bone, Petrified Wood...even Fossilized Dinosaur Droppings!  You never know what you'll find here on our Fossil Slabs page, because our selection is always changing.

Except as noted, all the fossil slabs you see have been tumble-polished, so edges and both sides are smooth.

Our current selection includes genuine Dinosaur Bone and fossil Coprolite, both from Utah.  (Coprolite is fossilized dinosaur droppings - a real conversation piece!)  We also have some nice Petrified Wood from Oregon, and Turritella Agate from Wyoming.  ("Turritella" is a bit of a misnomer, but the name has stuck, so that's what we'll call it.  Read the Story of Turritella Agate.)

Hope you enjoy browsing our collection!

Stromatolites, the world's oldest fossils,
are structures created by ancient blue-green algae.
This unpolished slab from England is more than 3 billion years old,
and forms a natural landscape, with trees, mountains, and a river.
This slab will polish nicely if desired,
but should be done by hand, not tumble-polished.

The Story of Turritella Agate

"Turritella Agate" is based on a case of mistaken identity.  This intriguing stone consists of fossils of freshwater snails that were deposited in a series of ancient lakes in present-day Wyoming.  When first discovered, they were mistaken for Turritella, a genus of marine snail with a similar high-spired shell, but that lives only in the ocean.  The name for this distinctive fossil stone has persisted, although the snails whose shells you see in these tumble-polished specimens are correctly classified as Elimia tenera, not Turritella.  They lived during the Eocene Epoch, about 50 million years ago.

How Do Fossils Form?

Most animals and plants don't turn into fossils after they die.  Conditions have to be just right, including rapid burial by sediments.  If a plant or animal dies and is quickly buried by sediments like mud and sand, the organic matter eventually decays.  Accumulating pressure turns the surrounding sediments into rock.  Over time, water rich in minerals seeps through the rock, and the minerals crystallize to replace the original organic structure.  Millions of years later, geologic forces bring the fossil-containing rock to the earth's surface, where it may be eroded by wind and rain, exposing the fossil to discovery.
